Millions of football fans were on the edge of their seats as England faced Switzerland in a penalty shootout to secure a spot in the Euro 2024 semi-finals. This dramatic moment was witnessed not only in homes and pubs but also at London’s Old Vic Theatre, where James Corden’s play, “The Constituent,” was set to premiere.
Instead of proceeding with the scheduled start, Corden joined the audience on stage to watch the thrilling match. Videos captured Corden kneeling, engrossed in the game on his tablet, and engaging the crowd with commentary on each crucial kick.
“The Constituent,” a political drama featuring Corden, Motherland star Anna Maxwell-Martin, and Zachary Hart, began shortly after England’s victorious shootout. The cast had been watching the match backstage when the tension escalated to extra time.
Corden recounted to The Guardian: “As extra time concluded, we prepared to begin the play. But the audience’s cheers made it clear they were engrossed in the match. With numerous glowing phones, it wasn’t the moment for a serious play.”
The cast decided to share the experience with the audience, taking an iPad on stage. “It was a wonderful, collective experience,” Corden said. “One of my favorite moments ever.”
Carla Feltham, an audience member, shared with PA News: “When Corden announced we’d watch the penalties together, everyone cheered. The atmosphere was incredible. It’s not every day you experience something like that.”
The play started 10 to 15 minutes late, but Feltham noted, “No one minded at all.” The unique decision by Corden ensured everyone enjoyed both the football and the theatre without missing a moment.
