After the Golden Globes returned from a diversity and ethics issue, Michelle Yeoh won the top acting prize. On Tuesday night, Yeoh, known for completing her own stunts, won best actress in a musical or comedy for her appearance in the dimension-hopping action picture Everything Everywhere All at Once. “Hollywood was a dream come true until I arrived here,” said the 60-year-old actress, who was branded a “minority” and asked if she could speak English early in her career. “It’s been an amazing journey and great battle to be here today, but I think it’s been worth it,” she remarked 40 years later.
The Globes honored Steven Spielberg, who was nominated 14 times for best director and won for the third time with his autobiographical coming-of-age film The Fabelmans, and Irish actor Colin Farrell, who won best actor in a musical or comedy for his role in the dark comedy of shattered friendship The Banshees of Inisherin. Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis, starring 31-year-old Austin Butler, won best actor in a drama. Butler said Presley, “You were an idol and a renegade and I love you so dearly,” in an emotional address. “You could at least play ‘Suspicious Minds’ or something,” he joked to the gala pianist when music interrupted his moment on stage. Australian Tár’s orchestral conductor Cate Blanchett won best actress in a drama. Avatar: The Way of Water and Top Gun: Maverick were excluded. Due to HFPA ethical issues, celebrities and NBC boycotted the 2022 Globes. The 80th Golden Globe Awards, the Hollywood awards season’s annual opener, attracted many of Hollywood’s greatest stars due to a larger, more diverse membership and other improvements. “I’m here because I’m Black,” host Jerrod Carmichael joked as the show began. “I won’t claim they were a racist organization,” he added before sitting on stage. They had no Black members until George Floyd died. Use that knowledge as you wish.” Angela Bassett, who played Queen Ramonda in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, earned a supporting actress award. “We showed the world what Black unity, leadership, and love looks like beyond, behind, and in front of the camera,” Bassett said as she raised her prize.
200 worldwide cinema journalists and others voted on this year’s Globes. According to the HFPA, 52 percent of those voters were racially and culturally diverse, including 10 percent Black. Mike White’s HBO series White Lotus won best limited or anthology series. Jennifer Coolidge accepted the prize for best supporting actress in a limited series after her tragic ending. “Even if this is the end,” Coolidge said White. “My neighbors are talking.”
